WHAT IS A PATENT?

A patent is, in a sense, a contract between a patent holder and
the U.S. government under which the government grants the
patent holder a limited monopoly. The limited monopoly
gives the patent holder the right to exclude others from
making, using, or selling a claimed invention in the United
States for a period of years. In return for these patent rights,
the patent applicant discloses the complete invention to the
public in order to promote the progress of science.
