As we celebrate Independence Day and the birth of our nation, it’s also a great time to recognize an important milestone in American innovation.
On July 4, 1836, the Patent Act of 1836 became law, establishing the foundation of the modern U.S. patent system. The Act created a formal patent examination process, introduced professional patent examiners, and established the patent numbering system still used today. Many of the procedures that inventors and businesses rely on today can trace their origins back to this historic legislation.
The Patent Act of 1836 helped transform the United States into a global leader in innovation by strengthening protections for inventors and encouraging the development of new technologies. Patent No. 1 was issued just a few days later on July 13, 1836, marking the beginning of a new era for American inventors.
This Fourth of July, we celebrate not only our nation’s independence but also the spirit of invention, creativity, and entrepreneurship that continues to drive America forward.
From all of us at Johnston IP Law, we wish you and your family a safe, happy, and innovative Fourth of July!
